Dear Friends,

Once again, we are offering some hints from Swami Paramananda about the way to live a scientific and spiritual life in this twenty first century.

There has never been so much knowledge before, especially in the scientific and material fields. It certainly makes our life very comfortable, nevertheless we do not feel fulfilled – something is missing. Modern knowledge has overshadowed mystical insight and the basic knowledge with which we should have started life.

Recently, we were blessed by the divine presence of our Master to UK (from the 13th to 22nd July). He was very active during his ten days visit. West Drayton, Alexandra Palace, Barking and Maidstone, Kent were places hosting meditation sessions by His Holiness. We organise group meditation in these areas and interested parties are most welcome to join in.

The divine ethos of SGAS UK originates from our Preceptor, H.H.Swami Paramananda. His rational and scientific approach coupled by his mastery of meditation methods have triggered the thirst of many seekers to embark on the inner journey. By the day, his work is gathering momentum and his vision for a global mind transformation is sure to be actualised in the near future.

Swamiji has so far authored fifteen books that explore various aspects of life, the human mind, the universe and the divinity concealed in man. If you want to buy any of his books or should you wish to learn more about meditation, please do not hesitate to contact us and to forward to us any query you may have. You may also wish to ask for guidance to Swamiji at sgas@intnet.mu.

The Global Mind Transformation

Mind is energy and energy is motion. The first law of existence is motion. The pristine state of energy is motionless motion. This may seem contradictory, but through perception it appears to be indeed that way. Those who have observed an electric fan in motion will have noticed that when the spinning is at its highest, it seems as if there is a stand-still because the blade of the fan is moving very rapidly. Similarly, the primordial state of energy looks like an infinite mass of motionless ocean though it is vibrating at an infinite frequency. The mystic says that mind is energy and energy is intelligence. The human mind is potentially that same energy which is infinite, thus all-pervading.

In its actual state, the human mind is like a seed which, though conceals the infinity, is encompassed of the layers of impressions of numerous births and repression of all sorts which, as Freud, Jung and others have said, form part of the unconscious layers of the mind. The conscious part of the mind is motivated by the waves of the unconscious mind which is stirred by events of the external world. Both virtue and vice are products of the mind. All mood in any individual is indeed from the mind. All evil of the past, present and future is indeed from the mind. If harmony, peace and a stable human society are to be achieved, it will be through the transformation of the human mind.

Society is made up of individuals, therefore the basis of a sane society will depend on a global mind transformation. A transformed mind is a godly mind or the real nature of the mind is godliness just as the nature of ice is water. The question is how to proceed in that endeavour. First of all, let it be pointed out that attempts have been made, though not on a global level, to discover the secrets of the mind and the causes that disturb us to such an extent as to produce psycho-somatic illnesses. Psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, psychiatry and other branches of psychology have found the day. Unfortunately till this day, not much effort has been made to discover the science of sciences that may lead to the total transformation of the mind which will give man the status of God.

Jesus, Krishna, Buddha, Mohammed and many others were the few souls who had gone through the process of mind transformation. They were depicted by the mortals as abnormal beings though they had a body like ours and their behaviour in general did not differ from ours. The ultimate science which could produce divinity from that stuff which is called man is meditation. It is the constant flow of pure energy from the infinite source which gave birth to the Universe - call it God or anything - and when it is expressed through the mind it is called knowledge, when expressed through the heart, it is called love. To become a recipient of that energy, the mind has to be processed through the fire of knowledge, action, love and methodology of practice.

The human mind is more or less in a stagnant state. From that, evil of all forms is taking root and is flourishing. The ultimate recourse is its transformation through meditation. It is strange that hospitals for physical and mental illnesses are found nearly all over the world, still there is much suffering. My proposal is the setting-up of schools for the study and transformation of the mind through the science of meditation. Hypnotism, psychology with its numerous branches such as psychotherapy and psychoanalysis will also be of much help in those schools.

But it will have to be understood that psychology stops at the unconscious mind while the science of meditation goes much deeper. To be able to understand meditation, a scientific approach to the nature of man, Universe and God will be needed to run courses in the schools that will work for the transformation of the human mind. Religious scriptures will be studied objectively with a view to find means and ways that may help in the process. The guides will be enlightened masters on the path of meditation who will be as perfect technicians. The centre or school of transformation will give access to people of all walks of life. Science will be of much help in that school as good health is the key to success. Science should help in creating the facilities that will help people in moving easily into meditation. For instance, time is a key factor in the practice of meditation. A few hours of practice everyday should be a very normal thing.

Advanced technology should be readily used to perform much work so that people would be free enough to work for the transformation of the mind. Relaxation is not strange to us, meditation is profound relaxation which releases pure energy from the ocean of the soul and burns all evil to its root. A relaxed mind can love, make good judgement and radiate peace. Much illness is caused by the negative vibrations of the mind. A meditative mind will eliminate that problem. It may seem utopian, yet it should be said that meditation can be a solution to all problems in the long run.

The evolution of mankind has reached a juncture where it will discover that the root of all evil and virtue is but the mind, therefore much will have to be done for the study of the mind. A global mind transformation is bound to take place. Jesus has prayed, “Let Thy will be done on Earth as in Heaven.” For the Earth to become like Heaven, each individual will have to become a divine being and the only way is to undergo a complete change in mind.

Metaphysics

Metaphysics means beyond physics. The word 'physics' comes from the Greek word "phisikoi", the study of nature. Therefore physics deals with the study of nature and the laws that govern them. However, nature is not all that exists and can be known, it is also not the absolute reality. On the contrary, it is an illusion, but not that it is not at all: it exists like a shadow or a dream. Physicist Eddington says, "The great difference between old and modern physics is that both the old and the new physics were dealing with shadow-symbols, but the new physics was forced to be aware of the fact that it was dealing with shadows and illusion, not reality." He further states, "In the world of physics, we watch a shadow graph performance of familiar life. The shadow of my elbow rests on the shadow of the table as the shadow of the ink flows over the shadow of the paper." The above statement of Eddington is a very high mystical realisation, as the mystic says that the whole of existence is like the reflection of an object on a lake. He calls this reflection "Maya", that is, that which exists but not as an absolute reality depending on itself. The Absolute Reality is the substratum of the shadow or reflection.

The goal of the mystics is to merge in that Absolute Reality which they say is boundless Pure Consciousness - Sat-Chit-Ananda of the Upanishads - transcending time and space. Metaphysics is the science which leads us to the metaphysical existence, that is, beyond the physical existence which is a shadowy existence or as a dream in the Creator's mind. When the atom was first discovered, it was thought to be the smallest indivisible particle constituting the building blocks of the universe. Then it was discovered that what was said about it was not true, for scientists discovered that the atoms could be further divided into still smaller particles (proton-neutron-electron). The electron which was thought to be a particle came out also as a wave, thus baffling the scientist's mind. As time is going on, new particles are being discovered such as quarks, mesons, hadrons and many others. From this we may say that things are not only as we perceive and our eyes allow us to behold only one aspect of reality.

Science uses sophisticated apparatus and laboratories to discover an iota of the reality of the phenomenal world which is an illusion. Mystics use their mind as the instrument and the mind itself as laboratory. They begin their search with their mind which is the substratum of day-dreams as well as of night-dreams. They finally discover that beyond the mind is the underlying reality which is the essence, the cause and the stratum of all that is seen.

The world we see is only one facet of the existence of names, forms and colours, it is a three dimensional one. The world of elementary and fundamental particles form another dimension known to the eyes of physicists. There are many other worlds of different dimensions which coexist without interfering with and affecting one another. They are made of still subtler particles which science will perhaps come to discover in the future. Each of these subtle dimensions is populated by beings of different forms and levels of evolution. The Bermuda Triangle could be a door to a dimension subtler than ours. During astral voyages and near-death experiences, people have related very strange phenomena. It is very easy to say that all these are hallucinations. In deep meditation, there cannot be any hallucination, for then one goes beyond the conscious and subconscious mind.

Hallucination happens when the mind is unconscious; it is a mental illness, while meditation is full alertness and beyond the ordinary state of a disordered mind. Dream, being a creation of the mind, is a dimension different from the gross physical one. The story of "Alice in Wonderland" is an example of a subtle dimension of our existence. This story is normally symbolical in a very deep sense, though it is not possible here to reveal the complete truth behind it.

Advanced students of metaphysics know that however many dimensions may exist, they are all relative to one another. The ultimate dimension is dimensionless - contradictory indeed! Yet it is true. Or it can be said that the ultimate reality is beyond all dimensions. The genuine seeker should not be lured by the strangeness and marvels of the different dimensions of existence because they may hinder further evolution. The ultimate discovery should be the "SELF" or God. In the mind of God, there are infinite dimensions which cannot be known by even the greatest human mind. It is not a question of belief or disbelief, but of realisation. One day science will discover some dimensions subtler than the world of elementary and fundamental particles. Already the Kirlian device can see the "aura" of persons and objects, these being in a different and subtler dimension of the physical existence. Man cannot think of anything unless it is in existence.

Science uses sophisticated apparatus and laboratories to discover an iota of the reality of the phenomenal world which is an illusion. Mystics use their mind as the instrument and the mind itself as laboratory. They begin their search with their mind which is the substratum of day-dreams as well as of night-dreams.
